The foundation organizing the awards
The "Romper Barreras Foundation" aims to promote assistive technology as a key element in improving personal autonomy and the quality of life for people with disabilities. Through the collaboration of its members, the foundation carries out various educational projects and international conferences that bring assistive technology closer to families, professionals, and organizations working with people with disabilities. These educational projects are complemented by software development initiatives, such as "Mi Voz" (My Voice), which involves creating synthetic children's voices for dynamic communicators used by non-speaking children. They also create spaces for recognition and promotion of technology use, like the "Romper Barreras Awards," which celebrated their tenth edition in 2023 and used Easypromos as the main participation tool.

One of the projects that strongly drives this promotion is the Romper Barreras Awards, which aims to promote the use of assistive technology (any product or software used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of people with disabilities) as a tool for autonomy, learning, recovery, and the social and labor integration of all individuals.

These awards aim to boost experimentation and the use of technology to improve the autonomy and social inclusion of people with disabilities, as well as a way to evaluate progress and showcase best practices.
The tenth edition of the Awards was divided into two categories: individual and collective.
- In the individual category, people with disabilities who use assistive technology either individually or together with their family, school, or work environment could apply. The goal was to show how their quality of life improved in an original, efficient, or decisive way.
- In the collective category, the focus was on non-profit entities that use assistive technology to enhance the quality of life for various groups of people with disabilities.
In this edition, the application phase was particularly exciting as they received numerous, exceptional proposals. After an evaluation process, 61 candidates, 14 individual candidates, and 47 collective candidates, advanced to the next stage - the popular vote. Each of these proposals represented an inspiring testimony and an example of how to "bring down barriers" and promote inclusion in our society.
During the 15-day popular voting phase (from June 8 to June 23), individuals who wanted to cast their votes could visit the Foundation's website, where the contest widget was embedded. From there, they could watch all the videos in their respective categories: individual and collective categories, and vote for their favorites. Each person could vote for as many videos as they wanted, but only one vote per candidate. This phase produced 12 finalists, 6 from each category, who proceeded to the evaluation and voting stage by an expert jury.
The results of the popular voting phase were taken into great consideration in selecting the winners. After the jury's decision, the winners were selected: one in the individual category and three in the collective category (due to a tie for the second position between two candidates). All winners will receive a cash prize and a supply of assistive technology products. The award ceremony will take place on October 19, 2023, at the Movistar Centre in Barcelona.
The tool used to manage the voting stage: Video Contest
The Romper Barreras Foundation used the Video Contest App to run the Awards. It allowed participants to share their candidacy in video format, and once their participation was validated, a popular vote was carried out to select the six most voted proposals in each category.
The organizers activated two video contests, one for each category. The main objective was to categorize the entries appropriately, making it easier for people to access and view them. The goal was to gather all the videos on a single platform where the video, along with the participant/center's name and the description they provided with their candidacy, could be viewed. This way, in addition to the video, viewers got more information about the candidacy and learned more about the person, center, association, organization, etc.
Contest Results
As for the results that the awards obtained regarding participation levels and votes in the video contest, the individual category achieved:
- 18 candidates
- 14 participants
- 32.681 votes
The collective category of the video contest achieved:
- 50 candidates
- 47 participants
- 48.197 votes
These figures endorse the significant promotion and impact that the awards had during the days they were active. In this way, the Romper Barreras Foundation achieved prominence and recognition for their work, while providing visibility to the use of assistive technology as a key element in improving personal autonomy and the quality of life for people with disabilities.
Testimonials
Ainhoa Morán
Secretary. Romper Barreras Foundation
The ease with which candidates can upload their videos and receive votes, as well as the simplicity with which we can review and validate the entries, is the reason why we have been using this Easypromos application for the past three editions.
Jennifer Arellano
Communication and community manager for the Romper Barreras foundation
Easypromos made it possible to have all the necessary tools to manage the Awards in one place: from receiving the videos, viewing and reviewing them, carrying out the popular voting phase, and finally, to announcing the winners. Having everything in one platform has facilitated our work and made us more efficient.
I would also like to highlight the excellent customer service. This edition has been the most massive, which led to a day of website overload. We quickly contacted customer service, and they solved the issue in a few hours, ensuring the voting could continue without major inconveniences.
