Campaign objectives and summary

Surfing Factory is a new brand of surfing boards that offers boards fully customized to their customers’ needs. As part of its positioning strategy, the brand organized an Instagram Stories giveaway to build brand awareness and increase visibility among its target audience.

The campaign was named #MyCustomSurfboard and to participate, users had to visit the brand’s website, design their customized surfboard, and take a screenshot. Afterward, they had to post a story with that image on their Instagram profile and mention the brand in it. The campaign went on for three weeks and drew over 800 participants and 1,100 new Instagram followers.

Surfing Factory's #MyCustomSurfboard campaign on Instagram Stories

A campaign on Instagram Stories was planned to launch the Surfing Factory brand and to position it as a model in the industry. The objective was to reach a younger audience and drive a specific audience segment to their website.

To achieve it, the agency developed a campaign based on Instagram Stories aimed at reaching the surfing community with a giveaway of a customized surfboard designed on their website’s board builder. The prize was valued at 1,000€

The campaign was planned to include additional actions from influencers, social ads, and mailing. To take part in the giveaway, participants had to access the Surfing Factory website and use the site’s Board Builder to create their customized board, take a picture or screenshot of their creation, and post a Story with it and include a mention to the brand.

The Instagram community is increasingly consuming content in Stories format. Hence, the agency concluded that this was the most appropriate format to reach its target audience. Using the Instagram Stories giveaway allowed the organizers to boost brand awareness and visibility. It was of paramount importance that the giveaway’s dynamic drove participants to the website as the objective was to promote their new website and its board customization feature. Using the Instagram Stories mentions giveaway the brand’s visibility increased and made the promotion more effective as it attracted more participants. What’s more, the agency curated trend-related content to incentivize participation and retain followers.

The action effectively reached Surging Factory’s target audience. There were over 800 participants (and therefore, mentions) and the brand’s Instagram profile got over 1,100 new followers. The action also achieved:

  • Close to 1 million impressions
  • 10.000 visits to the Brand’s Instagram profile
  • Over 3.000 interactions on the brand's profile

Considering the information collected during the 25 days that the campaign went on, the agency considers this campaign a brand launch landmark.

The solution: Instagram Stories Giveaway + List Giveaway

The agency needed to be able to monitor all the mentions of the brand while the giveaway lasted. To do so, they trusted Easypromos and used the platform’s Instagram Stories Giveaway tool, which allows for live monitoring of mentions of the brand for seven days and to randomly pick winners from among participants. This kind of giveaway is more innovative and complex than other dynamics as Instagram only allows the organizer to gather mentions in stories made by public profiles. Furthermore, the image’s information is only visible on the Instagram App and disappears after 24 hours.

The E-factoría agency was already familiar with Easypromos and had already run several giveaways on the platform, as it allows for a wide array of dynamization options to incentivize interaction on social media profiles. The campaign management was easy. However, project manager Juan García-Bericua pointed out that in this particular case, two different tools were used in combination since the promotion lasted 25 days. “The promotion was over 7 days long so we had to replicate the giveaway format to be able to gather all the mentions made throughout the promotion. Once every seven-day period was over we exported all the participations, gathered them all together, and picked the winner from a final list of participants.”

The biggest challenge of the Giveaway was sharing all the participating mentions on the brand’s Instagram profile. “It was quite complex, especially when it came to profiles set as private, as these are not gathered by the platform and require direct communication from the account to gather the information correctly”, pointed out Juan García-Bericua.

Sharing the giveaway on Instagram Stories

The communication strategy was based on the success of the Stories campaign. Users had to post their designs to their profiles, which prompted interactions among the community, providing added value to the communication as it allowed them to share plenty of customized surfboard designs created by users. Participants strived to come up with the best designs so that the brand shared that content, therefore generating a high level of engagement among the target audience that the brand wanted to reach. Consequently, participants became brand ambassadors and viralized the campaign and product by sharing it with their friends.

Additionally, the organizers curated their own content for social media (reels and posts of the best designs) and a newsletter to increase the reach of the campaign.
